What is Permaculture?

The word permaculture is originally from ‘permanent agriculture,’ then ‘permanent culture’. The concept originated in Australia, bringing together a long history of practices from indigenous cultures around the world, and combining them with the science of ecology, design approaches and appropriate technology.

With permaculture, people are treading lightly on our planet, in harmony with nature.

Permaculture is an ecological design method that attempts to build hospitable, sustainable communities. Designing regenerative and self-sufficient systems that mimic nature, that incorporate agriculture, architecture, and community development. This is done so by observing and  imitating nature, natural patterns and processes.

Permaculture aims to encourage resilience and long-term sustainability by placing an emphasis on ideas like diversity, closed-loop systems, and respect for the environment. This means the use of pesticides, artificial fertilizers are not used. The course is provided in what National Geographic calls the most biodiverse place in the world, the Osa Peninsula.

Isla del Caño

Isla del Caño is a biological reserve located in the Pacific region of the country, about 16bkm northwest of the Osa Peninsula, Puntarenas.

Isla del Caño covers 320 hectares of land and 5,800 hectares of sea. It has one of the most extensive and healthiest coral formations on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. In fact, the reserve contains five coral platforms that range from 0.8 to 4.2 hectares in size.

The true treasure of Isla del Caño is hidden in its depths, so if you are planning a visit, get ready to experience an incredible underwater adventure. Sea turtles, rays, dolphins, moray eels, barracudas, sharks, humpback whales, tuna, and other aquatic species are a regular sight. Note: Number of people who can be on the island per day is limited to 200 people, so booking in advance is recommended

Surfing Matapalo

One of the best parts about surfing Matapalo is the area surrounding the coast. As one of the best-preserved regions in Costa Rica, Matapalo is home to dense jungles, tons of endemic wildlife and not much else. The area is largely undeveloped and rather remote, so visitors should be certain they have what they need before heading to the beach. Though the roadways heading toward Matapalo are safe, some stretches are unpaved, so a four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended.

The Waves: There are three major surf spots in Matapalo and all boast strong right breaks that produce the kind of consistently strong waves that surfers dream about. The smallest of these breaks is Pan Dulce, Spanish for ‘sweet bread,’ which boasts a mellow right break that is better suited for beginning and moderately-skilled surfers looking to hit the waves – especially during good swells, when the waves really fire.

Ecotourism

To ensure preservation of this pristine area of the world we adhere to the Ecotourism principles. Ecotourism is about uniting conservation, communities, and sustainable travel. This means that we adopt the following ecotourism principles:

Minimize the impact on the national parks and support initiatives to preserve and replenish the nature

Build environmental and cultural awareness and respect.

Provide positive experiences for both visitors and hosts.

Provide direct financial benefits for conservation.

Generate financial benefits for both local people and private industry. We actively involve the local community and businesses in our endeavors.

Deliver memorable interpretative experiences to visitors that help raise sensitivity to host countries’ political, environmental, and social climates.

Recognize the rights and spiritual beliefs of the Indigenous People in the community and work in partnership with them to create empowerment.

Offset Carbon Emissions

Offsetting carbon emissions is embraced by us as a critical step in addressing the environmental impact of flying. Because of the carbon emissions we offer voluntary carbon offsetting schemes that let you compensate your flight emissions by contributing to activities that cut down on or sequester carbon dioxide somewhere else.
